The South-Brazilian Society of Irrigated Rice (SOSBAI), during the period from August 11th to 14th of 2015, will promote, in the Historic Center of Pelotas, the ninth Brazilian Congress of Irrigated Rice (IX CBAI), having as theme Science and Technology for the Optimization of Rice Production. The event is promoted by the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), counting on the co-promotion of the Agricultural Research and Rural Extension Corporation of Santa Catarina (Epagri), of the Rice Institute of the State of Rio Grande do Sul (IRGA), and of the Federal Universities of Pelotas (UFPel), of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and Santa Maria (UFSM). Conferences and Panels will be held at the Theater Guarany, whose construction dates from the years 1920/1921, projected by Stanislau Szarfarki, having accommodation for 1200 people. In addition to the technical-scientific content, it is intended, in this edition of the CBAI, enable participants to know "a little more" about the history and architecture of the region of Pelotas (http://www.pelotasturismo.com.br) by having plenary sessions also in other historical buildings of the city, such as the City Hall and the Public Library.
In this event related to the rice chain, strategic in the socio-economic and food security contexts of MERCOSUR, Brazil and State of Rio Grande do Sul, the IX CBAI will seek, also, to rescue historical and cultural aspects of the rice production in the municipality of Pelotas, which was one of the pioneers in using modern technologies in the rice cultivation and, over time, a generator of science and technology for the rice sector since the foundation, in 1883, of one of the oldest Schools of Agriculture in the country, still in activity, the Faculty of Agronomy Eliseu Maciel, formerly known as "Imperial School of Veterinary Medicine and Practical Agriculture" (http://history for edu.br//wp.ufpel./). Additionally to the historical and cultural aspects, the IX CBAI intends to expose the relevance of the rice production for the economy of the region of Pelotas, which in addition to an expressive production sector has one of the most prominent industrial poles of the cereal in Latin America.
Based on its theme, the Congress will stimulate the discussion and the intensification of forefront research, making possible to break the barrier of scientific and technological knowledge currently available to the rice crop, in order to reduce barriers and provide new elements that promote greater productive efficiency, aiming to increase the competitiveness and sustainability of the rice sector.
